Lughnasadh

Lughnasadh is pronounced ( LOO-nahs-ah ) and is also known as Lammas.

Lammas represents the last day of the summer and the years first harvest. The word Lam - Mas comes from the Angelo - Saxon word meaning Loaf Mass.

This was when the first loaf from the first harvest was baked, then it was taken to the same field where the ingredients were gathered, then it was broken up and scattered about the field with everyone giving thanks to the Goddess and the God for the return of the times of plenty. Lammas is the festival of Lugh, a Celtic god of fire and light, he is also the god of Crafts and Higher Skills. he was one of the gods and goddesses who arrived in Ireland on a celestial sailing ship of Light.

The festival is a celebration of the earths bounty and is a time of fun and laughter. It is also the time when we celebrate the sacrificial matting of the goddess and the god, ( in tarot decks this is usually represented by a pregnant woman ( Mother nature, the great Mother ).

The main themes of Lammas is therefore one of thanks giving, Sacrifice and transformation. Everyone whether they follow the craft or not ARE affected by and take part in the energies of the sacrificed and transformed corn king.

Herbs: Parsley, Marjoram, Flower petals, leafy salad herbs. Foods: Breads, Grains, Summer Fruits and Vegetables Any meal made up of the herbs and foods from above would be a wonderful way of celebrating this wonderful celebration.
